The ending of 2024 was one of the worst moments in my life. Bridges were burned, to put it lightly. I kept looking for answers, for signs. And the universe kept throwing signs at me, signs in relation to everything I had been going through, but they were haunting me. I felt so incredibly trapped by my circumstance.I went back home for winter break. I was away from everything for an extended period for the first time in months, and despite the mounting dread, for that moment, I had my head above water. And on New Year's Day, exactly one year from the day it will now release, Zephery sends me this instrumental they'd made. And something about it... just spurred me on. All on the first of the year, I added my own production on top, did the titled "pretty bird freestyle" in one take, and then I drove into the middle of my hometown. There's this old piano that's been there for years, kind of in the middle of the downtown. With my headphones on, I just started playing on top of the instrumental, over, and over, and over again. I don't have gloves. I must've played for a hour straight. My hands were practically frozen as I walked back to my car. I added those onto it, and I passed it back onto Zephery... and from there, it only grew. This song, to me, represents hope. The timing of how it all came together, on that first day of the year, despite everything continuing to suck for a long while after that moment... it gave me hope that I'd survive it all. Everything I thought was true about the world had fallen apart, but this frankly silly little song I made with one of my best friends was a constant reminder of things beyond me. That there was a world that wanted me to come as I was, and breathed life into me when I needed it most. And Zephery really is one of my best friends. And genuinely, such a great musician. They are uncompromising in their art; I have never heard a song from them that didn't feel so, SO much like them. Please check out some of her other work. A few of my favorites are AlphaBlox, BouncyBirdy from toys II, and Fly Away! (Eagle-eyed observers will also notice that this song is not our first together... A deep cut!) We're not here to impress you. We're here as us. And I think that's beautiful."pretty bird freestyle" is sampled all over my upcoming album. It's been granulated, stretched, squished into a million different sounds that found their ways all over the project. You might even be listening to it right now...It's kind of a strange first single, admittedly. It's not particularly bombastic, or attention-grabbing. It's actually pretty mellow. But I don't think it could've been anything else.

I made Silly (it is actually up on my bandcamp as an instrumental since jan 2nd of this year...) because many people over the years have said my music sounds like what C418 did for Minecraft, and I was like, "ok, I'm just gonna embrace that vibe". I was inspired a lot by Strad and Aria Math, and also a little bit by an unrelated game track, "Nico's Nextbots - Shop"2025 was a really big transitional period for both of us to be honest, and I think this song helped the both of us step into a new phase, in a sense. Working grueling night shifts full time to save up for moving left me exhausted, so starting the year off with pretty bird freestyle at the helm was refreshing. It's so hopeful and uplifting to me. It helps me power through challenging times. I always listened to it on the bus rides to work, bus rides home... And later in April on my way to Alaska, the biggest change of my life, I still listened to it. It's been here for me always. PBFS was also the first song that I stepped out of my comfort zone and contributed vocals for, something I hadn't done yet. That's why it's special to me...
